SUMMARY:#CaliforniansForALL College Corps: K-12 Education Tutoring
DESCRIPTION:California launched #CaliforniansForALL College Corps\, the first of its kind initiative\, to provide thousands of hours of service to address critical issues in K-12 education. The College Corps service program led by California Volunteers\, Office of the Governor\, provides college students with the opportunity to become College Corps Fellows and serve for an academic year.  \nCSU Fresno\, through the Jan and Bud Richter Center for Community Engagement and Service-Learning\, is a recipient of the #CaliforniansForALL College Corps grant and anticipates this funding will support approximately 70 Fresno State Students and 50 Fresno City College students to provide as much as 54\,000 hours of service to the community. In partnership with community-based organizations and local educational agencies (e.g.\, Fresno County Office of Education)\, the Fresno College Corps Fellows hold the potential to make a significant impact in mentoring and tutoring K-12 students.   \nThis session provides an overview of evidence-based practices for designing\, implementing\, and evaluating high-impact tutoring programs. As the California Colleges and Universities selected to support the College Corps are engaging in Planning and Program Development until July 2022 to launch the Service Year in August 2022\, it is imperative that grant recipients provide the training and implementation strategies to maximize the impact of tutoring on student learning outcomes. \nThis webinar\, co-hosted by California Volunteers\, the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence\, State Board of Education\, and California Department of Education is the second in a series of sessions that will support institutes of higher education\, local educational agencies\, and community-based organizations with implementing supplemental instructional programs and support services.  \nClick here to register for this webinar!

SUMMARY:Balanced Assessment Systems: A Case Study
DESCRIPTION:Balanced Assessment Systems: A Case Study of One District’s Journey to Rebalance their Assessment System for Improved Student Outcomes \nIn the 22-23 school year\, the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence (CCEE) launched the Data Research Learning Network (DRLN) to support districts and counties across the state in innovating their data and assessment practices. The DRLN is organized into three strands: \nDeeper Learning: Accelerate deeper learning through formative assessment practices\, including student agency in the learning process \nData Review: Assess current data and assessment programs to determine opportunities for innovative data-driven strategies \nData Dashboards: Enhance real-time data\, discussions and decisions by end-users who are teachers\, administrators\, and community \nIn this session\, as part of the Deeper Learning strand\, Rincon Valley Union School District (RVUSD) shares their learning experience to create a more balanced system of assessments with a special focus on formative assessment practices in mathematics. \nThe first part of this session focuses on the core concepts of Balanced Assessment Systems and the special role of Formative Assessments\, grounded in the collaborative work of CCEE and the Center for Assessment.  An assessment system is balanced when it is coherent\, comprehensive and continuous\, rooted in a common model of learning. (Center for Assessment\, 2019) This session unpacks these three core concepts and the two additional design considerations of utility and efficiency as districts move to rebalance their assessment systems. (Center for Assessment\, 2019). \nThe second part of this session features the application of the core concepts of Balanced Assessment Systems in Rincon Valley Union School District.  RVUSD district leaders share their learning experience of re-balancing their assessment system\, including the first two steps of conducting a needs assessment and creating an action plan. Special attention is paid to the role of formative assessment practices in the content area of mathematics. \nAfter this session\, participants will leave with a starter toolkit for Balanced Assessment Systems\, consisting of tools for a needs assessment and action plan.  Participants will also have access to CCEE’s MicroLearning courses on Balanced Assessment Systems and Formative Assessments to help start their own innovation journey.  Each micro-courses is divided into different parts containing pre-recorded video presentations that are between 15-25 minutes long\, as well as hyperlinks within the presentation handouts to additional resources and materials. \nRVUSD’s action-oriented research presents initial findings from their first year of participation in CCEE’s Data Research Learning Network\, focusing on formative assessment in mathematics.  Lessons learned center on building district capacity to better balance their system of assessments as bolstered by research conducted by the Center for Assessment in collaboration with CCEE.  The DRLN offers state-level amplification by documenting and disseminating innovative learning experiences to help other districts hoping to start their own innovation journeys. \nReference \nCenter for Assessment. SUMMARY:Supporting Black Student Achievement: Lessons Learned from Year 1 of the African American Student Success Network
DESCRIPTION:The partnership between the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence (CCEE) and the California Association of African-American Superintendents and Administrators (CAAASA) began in 2017 with a professional learning network (PLN) that focused on identifying the inequities experienced by African American students in California K-12 schools. The original network\, made up of four districts and three county offices\, examined these inequities and identified systems-change approaches to addressing them within their local educational agencies (LEAs). \nIn 2022\, the PLN participants were reconvened for a series of in-depth discussions and a review of available data and research to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on LEA’s ongoing work to improve outcomes for Black students. The results of these sessions were summarized in a brief released in June 2022. \nIn the Fall of 2022\, CCEE launched their Research-Practice Partnership (RPP) initiative\, a network of collaborative partnerships with districts and county offices that focuses on the application of continuous improvement and research processes to examine formative and short-term outcomes and support decision-making in the early stages of systems change. Five of the original CCEE-CAAASA PLN partners have rejoined to form the African American Student Success Network–each LEA team identifying a specific problem of practice to address a challenge or barrier impeding the academic achievement or social-emotional well being of their Black students. Facilitated in collaboration with CAAASA\, this network focuses on testing systems change processes to improve learning\, achievement\, and educational attainment outcomes for Black students. \nThis session will provide an overview of the work of the learning network participants\, reviewing the problems of practice and lessons learned across all five LEA teams and then provide an opportunity for audience members to have a more personalized exchange with one of the teams whose problem of practice\, strategies\, and outcomes are of particular interest. \nAll attendees will receive a summary brief including the latest data and results of this ongoing network. \nLearning Outcomes\nAttendees of this session will learn about: \n\nCAAASA and the CCEE and their role in educational research opportunities for LEAs\nThe application of continuous improvement cycles in supporting program implementation\nSpecific strategies and programmatic decisions made by Fresno Unified\, Lynwood Unified\, Pittsburg Unified\, Napa County Office of Education\, and San Diego County Office of Education to address the needs and accelerate the learning and well-being of their Black students\nLessons learned and challenges encountered by the LEAs in this network\, particular as it relates to the collection\, use\, and analysis of data and measures of impact to support programmatic decisions\nHow to apply the findings from this research practice partnership\, as well as other educational research opportunities to support learning in their own LEA\n\nEngagement\nAttendees will be asked to engage directly with the presenters through Q&A during the main presentation as well as to identify an LEA team they would like to engage with in a more personalized setting. Depending on the size of the room and the number of attendees\, we will provide opportunities for 2-5 breakouts by team for attendees to sit in smaller groups to learn more about the work of each LEA team and the results they have seen for their students.

SUMMARY:Guiding Our Schools Forward: Best Practices For Districts Utilizing Assessment Dashboards to Improve Data Literacy and Target Student Supports
DESCRIPTION:Many districts are guiding the way forward for their schools and students by leaning into business intelligence tools and leveraging their standalone legacy information systems to develop integrated data dashboards that provide administrators and teachers with accessible and actionable data at their fingertips to enhance student instruction and tiered supports. \nIn 2023\, the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence launched the Data Research Learning Network to support local education agencies in innovating their data and assessment practices by focusing on developing deeper capacity around data analyses\, data practices\, and data dashboards to support student outcomes. In this session\, two districts participating in the DRLN – Sanger Unified School District and San Ramon Valley Unified School District – will share their work on emerging best practices on data dashboards. They will discuss their experiences developing customizable assessment dashboards to move their districts beyond generic reports and spreadsheets\, and more importantly\, the strategies that they have developed to build capacity around data literacy so district administrators\, site leadership\, and classroom teachers can utilize real-time comprehensive data to guide instruction and interventions. \nDuring this session\, Sanger Unified School District (SUSD) will share their development of a comprehensive\, consistent\, and cohesive data system that allows for multiple levels to take action for student success. At each school site\, teachers will use these data dashboards to make instructional decisions to support students and help them accelerate learning\, and support staff and school sites will be able to more closely monitor progress and make shifts in practices to ensure that all students are receiving the appropriate interventions based on their unique academic needs. To accomplish this\, SUSD is supporting data literacy by revamping its Principal Summits to focus on actionable data and metrics that support the creation of a Summit Success Plan. In addition\, a District Data Team will use a Data Chat Protocol to engage with site leadership and grade-level teams in formal Site Data Chats. Ultimately\, the goal of these efforts is to build district and site leadership capacity to access and analyze data\, and build teacher and site support staff capacity to improve instruction and support mastery of grade-level standards. \nAlso in this session\, San Ramon Valley Unified School District (SRVUSD) will share their development of a new customizable data visualization platform for disaggregating data in highly flexible\, efficient and varied ways. These data dashboards yield profile data that can quickly be used to track performance\, monitor interventions\, and clearly delineate desired achievement outcomes with features including customizable data walls\, real-time filtering\, and a process for documenting intervention progress. To support data literacy\, a tailored professional development series and data coaching tool is designed specifically to meet the needs for four employee groups: district administration\, site administration\, liaisons\, and teacher data leads. Feedback loops and survey data are collected at every professional development session to customize and streamline data processes and analyses. In addition\, SRVUSD is developing a data handbook that includes professional development materials and resources\, such as data coaching tools and formative assessment feedback. Ultimately\, the goal of these efforts is to support the formation of site-based intervention groups to increase the use of data to identify students into Tier I\, Tier II\, and Tier III intervention groups\, to provide targeted assistance\, and achieve a high exit rate through a push-in and pull-out model. \nIn addition to the two district presentations\, the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence (CCEE) will share emerging best practices developed with LEAs participating in the Data Research Learning Network (DRLN) for measuring the impact of data dashboards by utilizing user engagement statistics\, web analytics\, and progress monitoring. As part of the DRLN\, LEAs have created action plans to explicitly link their innovative data and assessment project to student impact through the development of specific project goals and strategies\, aligned with the development of baseline\, mid-year\, and end-of-year outcome measures. To support participating LEAs with the developing action plans\, the CCEE will share an interactive workshop designed to disseminate best practices. Measuring user statistics will vary by district depending on the purpose and objectives of each unique data dashboard\, but common measures of web traffic\, different techniques to measure website utilization\, and potential data analyses will be discussed. \nLearning Outcomes\nParticipants in this session will be able to: \n\ndescribe the process and characteristics of developing and implementing comprehensive integrated assessment data dashboards for decision-making on student instruction\, intervention\, and tiered supports.\nidentify various types and methods of web analytics that can be used to track the engagement and impact of data dashboards.\napply data literacy strategies to promote data engagement and decision-making at the district-\, school-\, and classroom levels.\n\n  \nEngagement\nA variety of strategies will be employed to enhance engagement for session participants. Leaning on principles of Universal Design for Learning\, the proposed 60-minute breakout session will be organized in a roundtable format for deep and meaningful discussions and interactions. The session will start with a Mentimeter survey to build community and allow attendees to share their background\, familiarity\, and experience with data dashboards. During the roundtable discussion\, each presenter will utilize the presentation screen to share presentation slides\, provide a demonstration of their data dashboards\, and display the data literacy resources that they have created. During their presentation\, participants will be directed to a mobile Padlet website that they can use to share their comments\, and questions. Padlet feedback will be used as a starting point for the Q-and-A portion of the session. Finally\, a printed handout will be provided to session participants with a summary of the various methods and techniques that they can use at their sites to develop meaningful data dashboards\, measure user engagement and web traffic\, and enhance data literacy. \n
