SUMMARY:Introduction to Balanced Systems of Assessment
DESCRIPTION:This webinar draws on the presenters’ extensive expertise and experience to help participants understand the rationale for balanced assessment systems by starting with clearly articulating the intended uses of assessment results. This webinar will introduce participants to the criteria for judging the balance of a system of assessments because even though districts have many assessments\, it does not mean they have a balanced system.  This also involves an honest appraisal of how well current assessments are meeting these needs. This first webinar concludes with a discussion of the barriers to implementing balanced assessment systems. In other words\, there are many reasons why we rarely see balanced assessment systems in practice. Understanding these barriers is the first step in overcoming them. \nFacilitated by Scott Marion\, Ph.D.\, Executive Director\, Center for Assessment

SUMMARY:The Critical Role of Curriculum and Learning Progressions in Balancing Assessment Systems
DESCRIPTION:This webinar focuses on the most important criterion—coherence—and how it can be supported with high-quality curriculum and learning progressions. We discuss the importance of curriculum and learning progressions as a foundation for assessment and assessment system design and\, even more importantly\, to provide an interpretative lens for making sense of the instructional power of assessment results. Relying on experts in curriculum\, this webinar highlights the features that distinguish high-quality curriculum and learning progressions from lower quality processes and products. \nFacilitated by Scott Marion\, Ph.D.\, Executive Director\, Center for Assessment

SUMMARY:The Components of a Balanced Assessment System
DESCRIPTION:There is an unfortunate “urban legend” about balanced assessment systems. Many appear to think that an assessment system is balanced when it includes summative\, interim\, and formative components. This is not true. This webinar discusses the key features of various types of assessments and helps participants understand how to evaluate components of an assessment system in light of the intended purposes and uses. We discuss\, specifically\, what it takes for assessments to be instructionally useful as well as the power of curriculum-embedded\, unit-based assessments. \nFacilitated by Scott Marion\, Ph.D.\, Executive Director\, Center for Assessment

SUMMARY:Creative Solutions for Summer Staffing: Partnering with Higher Education and Pre-Service Teachers
DESCRIPTION:Summer learning provides a unique training ground and flexible learning space for teacher preparation and pre-service teachers. These early-career teachers are an especially important workforce to tap this summer\, when the existing teaching and expanded learning workforce is busy meeting the demands of school reopening. CSU and community college schools of education can provide a variety of resources and support to schools and expanded learning programs. Schools districts and their higher education partners can intentionally recruit and leverage new teachers and teachers candidates from their existing teacher pipeline programs.

SUMMARY:Root Cause Analysis: Investigating Problems In Our School Systems
DESCRIPTION:California’s special education monitoring processes are shifting from a compliance focus to a continuous improvement approach. Local Education Agencies (LEAs) identified for monitoring are now required to develop an annual Special Education Plan (SEP). Now more than ever\, LEAs have the opportunity to leverage monitoring processes and the development of the SEP to reveal inequities in their systems and affect real and sustainable improvement. Given the complexities of our school systems\, identifying the root causes of systemic inequities can be challenging. To promote meaningful improvement that proves to be sustainable over time\, leadership teams must engage in deep\, thoughtful\, and multi-faceted root cause analysis. This approach to root cause analysis provides key information that will empower school teams to develop improvement plans resulting in better outcomes for students with disabilities. \nIn this three-part training series\, participants will: \n\nDiscuss key system thinking concepts\, with an emphasis on identifying and managing our mental models.\nExplore three components of a thorough root cause analysis: data analysis\, accessing user perspective\, and process mapping.\nCreate a root cause analysis investigation plan to inform the development of the Special Education Plan (SEP) and/or other improvement efforts.\n\nFor a more comprehensive learning experience\, please join all three sessions in this series: \n\nSession 1 – Monday\, May 10 from 9:00am-12:00pm\nSession 2 – Monday\, May 17 from 9:00am-12:00pm\nSession 3 – Monday\, May 24 from 9:00am-12:00pm\n\nWant to share this with your network? SUMMARY:Theories of Action as a Tool for Developing and Implementing Balanced Assessment Systems
DESCRIPTION:In this webinar\, we introduce theories of action as a tool for helping district and school leaders identify the problems/issues they are trying to address through the design and implementation of assessment systems. Further\, theories of action provide a comprehensive framework for analysis\, evaluation\, and continuous improvement. In addition to helping participants understand the usefulness of theories of action\, we share several practical tools to help participants begin to develop theories of action for balanced systems of assessment. \nFacilitated by Scott Marion\, Ph.D.\, Executive Director\, Center for Assessment
