Increasing Communication in the Classroom: Functional Communication Training and Augmentative & Alternative Communication

Communication skills are fundamental to a student’s success in their educational program. When students have challenges communicating effectively, teams often seek alternatives. Functional Communication Training (FCT) includes practices that can help a student replace challenging behavior that has communication function with communication behaviors that are more effective. Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) tools and techniques include those that are not verbal/vocal which may be useful to students as they learn to communicate effectively.
