There is an abundance of empirical research to indicate it is best practice to intervene before problematic behaviors occur. The application of universal interventions (primary prevention) can lead to a reduction in office discipline referrals, reduction in suspensions, referrals for special education, and improved academic performance. Universal supports and instruction are the core supports and strategies provided to all students within the school to promote successful student outcomes and prevent school failure.
