Assessing Intellectual Disability and Communicating Findings with Care and Clarity

March 1, 2027 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Join the California Early Childhood Special Education (CalECSE) Network for this important no-cost virtual training focused on Intellectual Disability Assessments and Compassionate Family Communication. This session will explore best practices for conducting comprehensive and culturally responsive intellectual disability assessments in early childhood settings while also addressing the sensitive and often difficult conversations that can accompany the sharing of assessment results with families. Participants will examine how multidisciplinary teams can approach evaluations with empathy, clarity, and collaboration while honoring each child’s strengths, developmental profile, and family experience.

The training will also address considerations related to Larry P. requirements and assessment practices, including implications for cognitive assessment selection, interpretation, and eligibility decision-making within California special education systems. Participants will engage in discussions around family-centered communication, navigating emotional conversations, and supporting families through the assessment and eligibility process with dignity and care.
